Exciting News: Health Net Adds Doula Services to Commercial Plans in 2025

Beginning January 1, 2025, Health Net is offering Doula services to members with commercial plans, including HMO, POS, and PPO plans. This is great news for pregnant and postpartum members who want extra support during their journey.

Doulas are professionally trained Pregnancy Coaches who provide emotional, physical, and educational support before, during, and after childbirth. They also offer help after events like miscarriage, stillbirth, or abortion. Doulas teach about health, help create a birth plan, give breastfeeding support, and connect families to community resources. While Doulas do not provide medical care, their role is important for promoting better health and emotional well-being during pregnancy and after birth.

Members who are actively enrolled in Health Net and are pregnant — or who were pregnant within the last 12 months — can qualify for Doula services. Support can be provided virtually or in person, at home, in the hospital, at an office, or in a birth center. Members can receive:

• One initial visit

• Up to eight additional prenatal or postpartum visits

• Labor and delivery support (including miscarriage, stillbirth, or abortion support)

• Two extended postpartum visits (each lasting three hours)

Doulas can also provide extra supportive services during home visits, like helping with light tasks while offering emotional support — for example, folding laundry or talking through breastfeeding questions.

Some services are not covered, including massages, placenta encapsulation, yoga, photography, and ceremonial practices.
